FAQs
Here are the questions we are most frequently asked by our clients. If you can’t find an answer you’re looking for just get in touch and we’ll do our best to help you.
We don’t employ separate sales people, surveyors or fitters so the only two people you will come into contact with during the whole process are Bruce and Rowenna. We take our responsibilities very seriously and wear face masks and wash and sanitise our hands. If we come to your home we practice safe distancing.
After every installation Rowenna will use a sanitiser to wipe down your new shutters and the areas we have come into contact with. You can start with a contactless process by sending us your window measurements and a photograph.
This is the number one question we are asked because most people want to enjoy the natural light that comes into their room. If correctly designed shutters can maximise the available light whilst giving you lots of control over the amount of light and privacy you want.
Some designs like tier-on-tier and narrow louvres can put a lot of shutter in the window so we like to use simple designs with larger louvres. We have some big demonstration panels so you can get a real feel for how it will work.
The second most popular question is about how the shutters will open. Shutters are arranged in panels that are hinged to a frame like your windows. They open into the room. When we design we are careful to consider how this will work for you. Shutters are so versatile that you almost certainly only open them when you want open or clean a window.
There are basically three types of materials used for shutters; wood, MDF and ABS plastic. Each material has different characteristics and applications. Generally wood is best, MDF is cheaper and ABS is for use in high humidity locations such as a bathroom. We can advise you of what is the best material for your windows.
Shutters need to be fitted level and square for the panels to align and open and close properly. Your windows will almost certainly not be level, but don't worry because we will use our expertise to make sure your shutters fit perfectly. Once you have decided to have shutters fitted we will carry out a detailed survey of your windows and we can then advise the best fitting method for you.
Louvres are the slats that move inside the panel. You can angle them to get just the right amount of light and privacy. Louvres are available in widths from 47mm upto 114mm.
Part of the design process is to choose a louvre size that looks best in your window. The large demonstration panels we use means you can see how it will look.
There are two methods of adjusting the louvres. Traditionally louvres were linked by an external control rod that was attached to all the louvres. The modern way is to have the control mechanism hidden inside the panel.
With this method you simply push any louvre and it automatically moves all the other louvres in the panel. Hidden control rods are really good because they give a much cleaner look to the window.
No shutters are truly black out but you can choose shutters that have an additional blind within the same frame. In this way you can get very near to black out.
For high humidity areas we supply ABS shutters. They are 100% waterproof and have stainless steel hinges and fixings.
All our shutters have a 3 year guarantee. Added to that is our promise that we will guarantee that you will be 100% satisfied with your new shutters.
Shutters are a higher cost option for window coverings. Typically they cost more than blinds or curtains. The factors that affect the cost of a shutter are; the size of your window, whether you choose wood, MDF or ABS, your choice of external or hidden control rods and any specific requirements for the installation.
If you can provide us with just the width and height of your window and preferably a photo we can give you some indicative costs. If you prefer we will come and measure them for you.
Because we don't employ staff and have lower overheads, we are usually very competitive. We are not always the cheapest but we do make sure that what we design is the best option for you and we don’t cut corners or make compromises.
When it comes to price we offer our best price first and don’t engage in the dubious practice of starting off high and then discounting.
Everything you need and nothing else to pay. Survey, design, delivery and installation.
You pay a deposit with the order and the balance on the day the installation is completed.
We advise 10 to 12 weeks from order to fitting. This is an industry standard due to your shutters being bespoke made oversea and then shipped to the UK.
We take our environmental responsibilities seriously. We take all our packaging with us and ensure it is properly recycled.
No, we keep our overheads as low as possible. We will come and visit you in your home and that gives you the distinct advantage of being able to try panels against your windows so you get a really good idea of how they will look for you.
